What is a
dermabrasion?
This is a highly sophisticated, controlled scraping of the facial skin
that is used to smooth fine wrinkles, scars left by acne or previous
non aesthetic surgery.
The procedure can be performed on a small area of the facial skin or
on the full face, either independently or in conjunction with other
procedures such as facelift.
Who is a good
candidate for a dermabrasion?
Men and women of all ages can benefit from dermabrasion. For men, the
healing process may be somewhat longer than for women. In addition,
the older the patient, the longer it will take the skin to heal. Patients
who have wrinkles or deep acne scars may require dermabrasion in two
or three stages to achieve the desired result without further scaring.
There are people, who are not good candidates for dermabrasio. For example,
patients during active stages of acne because the risk of infections
is greater.
Are there
risks involved?
While all surgery carries some risk, and plastic surgery is no exception.
Serious complications are infrequent when the breast lift is performed
by qualified plastic surgeon. Heavy smokers should be aware that nicotine
can delay healing. Risk of complications can be minimized by closely
adhering to your surgeon’s advice on follow-up care.
What will
happen during surgery?
Dermabrasion usually is performed under general anesthesia. The length
of the surgery will depend on how large an area of skin is involved.
During surgery, your surgeon will use an electrically operated instrument
with a diamond stone or wire brush to scrape the outermost layer of
skin, until the skin is at level that will make the scar less visible.
Again, if you have deep scars, the procedure may need to be performed
two or three times to achieve the desired result.
When the procedure is complete, your surgeon may apply an ointment to
your skin, as well as a wet bandage.
Any pain can be controlled with medication, which your surgeon will
prescribe. If a bandage is used, it will be removed the day following
surgery so that the healing process can begin.
Any swelling will begin to subside about a week after surgery, which
will help you feel more comfortable. A scab or crust will form over
the area of surgery as it begins to heal. The crust will fall off as
a new skin surface forms underneath. Your surgeon may recommend that
you apply ointment to make you more comfortable as your skin heals.
The decision on when to return to work and normal activities depends
on how fast you heal and how you feel. Sports should be avoided for
four weeks.
What is the
fee?
Fees and operative facility costs of dermabrasion vary widely, depending
on the length and complexity of the operation. Additional expenses will
depend on the anesthesia used, and how long have you been in a hospital.
