What is a
rhinoplasty?
Aesthetic nasal surgery, or rhinoplasty, is reshaping the nose to impruve
its appearance. It may also be done in conjunction with an operation
performed to relieve nasal obstruction due to an internal deformity.
Who is a good
candidate for a rhimoplasty?
Man and women of all ages (over 18 year) with large nose, nasal hump,
enlarged tip and nose that hangs slightly where it meets the upper lip.
The extent of procedure depends on what changes are desired and what
your surgeon deems appropriate.
Are there
risks involved?
While all surgery carries some risk and plastic surgery is no exception.
Serious complications are infrequent when the rhinoplasty is performed
by qualified plastic surgeon. Risk of complications can be minimized
by closely adhering to your surgeo’s advice on follow-up care.
What will
happen during surgery?
The surgery may take two to three hours. Rhinoplasty usually is performed
under general anesthesia. In most nasal surgery an incision is made
inside the nostrils, through which the work will be done. In some cases
incision is made on collumela. The incision provides the surgeon with
access to cartilage and bone which can be cut, trimmed and manipulated
to reshape the nose and alter external appearance. A hump is removed
by using a sawing instrument. Removing cartilage reduces the size of
nasal tip and provides better contour. To improve the angle between
the bottom portion of the nose and the upper lip, the nasal tip is elevated.
If the base of the nose is disproportionately wide to narrow it, small
skin wedges are removed and the nostrils are brought closer to center.
Frequently nasal packs are inserted to protect the nasal septum, particularly
if septal surgery has been performed.
After surgery, there is some pain and discomfort which is easily controlled
by medication. You will remain in the hospital for a day or two. The
splint is often removed within a week of surgery, although it may advise
you to wear the splint at night. Nasal packing may stay in a few days
before it is removed. Bruising around the eyes will begin to fade within
a few days. Subtle swelling may be present for months. Normal healing
is gradual process, with final results not fully realized for period
of time.
The decision on when to return to work and normal activities depends
on how fast you heal and how you feel. Sports should be avoided for
four weeks.
What is the
fee?
Fees and operative facility costs of rhinoplasty vary widely, depending
on the length, technique and complexity of the operation. Additional
expenses will depend on the anesthesia used, and how long have you been
in a hospital.
